Subject: English Texts Lists 2013: Comments Invited

Over the last several years the TQA has used Text Selection Guidelines that call for approximately 25-30% of texts on the prescribed lists to change each year.

By the end of this year it is planned that new Tasmanian English course documents (that will make use of content and standards developed by ACARA) will be available for teachers to use in planning during 2013, for their use in 2014.

It has been suggested to the TQA that in the light of the development of new course documents we should retain the 2012 texts list in 2013 so as to allow greater focus on planning associated with the new courses.

We have already decided that the following texts will not appear on the 2013 lists:

English Communications:
Joe Cinque's Consolation, Helen Garner
V for Vendetta, James McTeigue (2005)
The Choir of Hard Knocks

English Studies:
Fulfilment theme in Poetry (all texts)
Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Adichie
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak
An Imaginary Life, David Malouf
The Weekend, Bernhard Schlink
The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Peter Shaffer
Jindabyne, Ray Lawrence
Joe Cinque's Consolation, Helen Garner
The Black Balloon, 2008 Elissa Down

For 2013 we could:
A) develop new texts lists based on our usual Text Selection Guidelines (25-30% change of texts)

B) re-use the 2012 lists (minus the texts noted as not appearing on the 2013 lists)

C) re-use the 2012 lists (minus the texts noted as not appearing on the 2013 lists) and seek suggestions for new texts to replace those removed from the lists.

We would welcome your thoughts on which of the option (A, B or C above) should be adopted.

Please email your comments to me by Tuesday 22 May 2012.
