The Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)

The philosophy of the TCE aims to promote students power to learn, and ultimately to learn independently of instruction and guidance.

Criterion Based Assessment

Student assessment is criterion based and measures student performance against specified standards within criteria. The criteria separate the knowledge, skills and competencies that students must acquire to succeed in a given syllabus and the standards describe the graded outcomes attainable within each criterion.

Role of the TQA

The Tasmanian Qualifications Authority is responsible for ensuring that:

  • Assessment procedures are fair, valid and reliable; and
  • Awards earned by students in all Year 11 and 12 subjects, are comparable from student to student and from school to school.

To assist schools, the TQA provides:
  • Syllabuses which include objectives, assessment criteria, and standards for rating student achievement;
  • Support material which may include curriculum ideas, assessment tasks, sample examination papers or exemplars of students' work;
  • Quality assurance procedures which include consensus moderation meetings and final award approval.

Schools that provide TCE courses

Schools/colleges register annually with the TQA if they intend to provide TCE courses and want certification for their students' results. The registration includes a commitment to meet TQA quality assurance requirements. The list of schools/colleges for 2007 is for those registered with the TQA and does not nescessarily imply that all of them are delivering TCE courses.
