Students will be provided with opportunities to connect with, and reflect on, their own and others' relationship with the environment. The course must be delivered through theory and practical components. The strong link between the theoretical and practical aspects allows students to develop some knowledge and understanding and then apply and expand upon it in practical situations. Learning and developing skills will be delivered in an holistic way. Outdoor Education consists of two (2) strands: The Expedition strand is designed to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in self-sufficient land and / or water based journeys over extended periods of time. Such journeys could include more remote locations and be delivered locally, nationally or internationally. Diet and preparation of meals, personal hygiene, navigation, establishing shelters and personal and group dynamics are examples of content that may be given greater emphasis. The Adventure Recreation strand is designed to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of outdoor activities, with significant skill development in at least 3 contrasting activities. These activities will be delivered within program resourcing constraints, may require up to a full day of involvement, and could include consecutive days involvement with a self-contained overnight experience. This course employs a criterion based assessment methodology.
